Client certificate registration

Warning We've recently moved to a private digital certificate authority and you'll need to install 2 certificates the first time you use this service. The new certificate authority can be installed by using the ‘Install CA’ option on the Digital ID Center website and must be installed before following the instructions below. Contact our Support team if you're not sure whether this has been done.

Registration

Registering for and installing a digital certificate is a four step process.

  1. Go to the Digital ID Center website.
  2. Click on 'Enrol'.
  3. Enter your:
    • first name
    • last name
    • email address
    • contact telephone number
    • local authority code (please use your DETR district code - a letter followed by four numbers. This is available from the Support team if necessary).

    Please note that the email address provided will also be used to provide system wide messages.

  4. Enter a challenge phrase. This may be required in the future - please keep it safe!
  5. Enter optional comments for the administrator if you feel this is necessary.
  6. Click 'Submit'.
  7. Confirm your email address and your certificate's security settings.
  8. When this is all completed, you will be instructed to check your email inbox where further information will be sent.

  1. When your certificate request has been approved or rejected, you will receive an email to inform you of this. You can't receive your certificate if your request has been rejected.
  2. In the email will be a URL for your browser and a PIN.
  3. Go to the URL in your browser and enter the PIN in the box provided, then click 'Submit'.
  4. You will now be redirected to a page with the certificate's details, click the 'Install' button to install the certificate.
  5. Your digital certificate has now been downloaded and installed in your browser.

  1. Depending on your software, the certificate may still need to be exported and copied to your file system.
  2. Please check with your software supplier's instructions to complete the installation process.
  3. When your digital certificate is fully installed it needs to be activated before it can be used.

  1. When you have fully installed your certificate, please contact our Support team to set up a message queue (if necessary) and activate your certificate.
  2. Please note that all new certificates need to be activated - including renewals.
